St Georges School

372 Purgatory Road, Middletown, RI 02842
(401) 842-6705

The specific objectives of St. George’s are to give its students the opportunity of developing to the fullest extent possible the particular gifts that are theirs and to encourage in them the desire to do so. Their immediate job after leaving school is to handle successfully the demands of college; later it is hoped that their lives will be ones of constructive service to the world and to God.

Founded in 1896 as an Episcopal boarding school by the Rev. John Byron Diman, St. George’s today lives firmly in the 21st century, with state-of-the-art academic and athletic facilities, and an innovative curriculum that prepares students to become the thoughtful, compassionate leaders and doers the world needs most. With an enrollment of approximately 370 students, roughly 80% are boarders. The school maintains an intimate 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, with classes typically grouping around 10–12 students. The student body is diverse, with about 33% students of color, and 15–16% international students representing around 11 countries.

Curriculum

A St. George’s education prepares students for the demands of college, while also empowering them to serve the world far beyond the Hilltop. Our classroom experiences are designed to be transformative. A rich selection of core classes and upper-level seminars ground students in essential learning and allow them to explore their interests. Individual course counseling helps students shape their own path while learning on the Hilltop.

Programming

Programs such as sailing the ocean with the Geronimo program, running races, traveling to Hollywood to learn more about the entertainment industry, etc. are all great ways to get students involved.

Activity/Sports Requirements

St. George’s provides a robust extracurricular program including about 43 interscholastic teams across a wide array of sports, serving both competitive and recreational interests. The afternoon programming structure encourages participation in athletics, arts, or service, balancing academic rigor with personal growth and community engagement.

Dress Code

Button-up shirts (with or without neckties), collared shirts, tops, and blouses. Blazers, sweaters, quarter zips, and vests may be layered on top of approved top attire. All students must wear tops that provide full coverage. Tops must meet or cover the waistband of bottoms. Appropriate bottom attire includes: dress pants, chinos, khaki pants, corduroy pants, shorts of similar styles, dresses and skirts.

Seated Meals

No seated meals

Study Hall

Study hall occurs nightly and is proctored by student prefects and faculty dorm parents. Seniors and juniors often have single rooms (~70% of dorm rooms), balancing privacy with opportunities for social and academic collaboration in communal spaces, libraries, or learning centers.

Residential Life

Eighty-eight percent of St. George’s students are boarders. Except for third-form residences, the remainder of our 11 dorms house fourth-, fifth- and sixth-form students together. This residential model makes dorms a melting pot of cultures, ages, interests and identities. Students exchange knowledge, become friends, and build support systems with students completely different from themselves. About 70 percent of St. George’s dorm rooms are singles, giving students the option of keeping their door open to socialize or to study intensely in private.
